Instead of the usual questions concerning a Carver "father of minimalism" or the inauthenticity of his second collection of short stories, heavily remodeled by the editor Gordon Lish as noted, the author prefers to orient himself towards the poetic foundation of his writing - the duplicity of "predator" writer and voyeur Raymond Carver - able to embrace and understand them all.
The essay thus ventures into the "invisible forces" at work in the writer's life and pages with testimonials, documents and a hermeneutic look that witnesses the "fall" and dissociation of the first characters up to the slow return home (of the Father) of the last, drawing the transition from a state initial of - precisely - voyeurism , hunting spirit and "child aversion" to theirs final retraction in faith (the reconciliation with God through the Bread of Life of the death of the child in A little, good thing ) and that is, in the terms of Carver himself, in the spirit - and in the heart - really divine of a "beginner" (in terms of love).
The work was a finalist, ranking 3rd in the non-fiction section, at the 2021 edition of the Città di Castello Literary Prize .
